 Spiritual Practices and Your Bible

For a number of Sundays I asked how many of you had remembered to bring your Bibles with you to worship.  While some found humor, even pride, in waving your Bibles in the air, others were frustrated by the repetitive question, and understandably so.  The biggest problem was my design for what I was moving towards.  What I wanted was to get us in the habit of bringing our Bibles before I explained the why of what I was asking you to do.  I really did have a goal, but the way that I wanted to present it did not work well.

Spiritual practices are a very important part of our life together, and for each of us in our own journeys.  I have wanted to introduce several within the congregation, and will perhaps try them again, but with little response.  I will continue to try to introduce them as I feel they are central in our spiritual and faith formation.  I realize that much is being asked of you, but this is part of the cost of being a disciple of Christ, and not just a fan of personal salvation.

So why was I asking, and why do I want you bringing your Bibles with you on Sundays?  The answer is simple:  Because.  Because it makes you be aware of where your Bible actually is.  Because it makes you have to have one.  Because it makes you aware of your need for it.  Because it is simply wise to follow along with what you are comfortable.  Because you may want to make some notes in the margins during worship.  Perhaps you will be more likely to read the surrounding passages of the daily Scriptures.  Maybe, just maybe, you will be more willing to make it a part of your daily life if you can make it a part of your Sunday life.

In all you do may you know the Living Lord, Jesus Christ!

Vacation Bible School was held June 22nd throught the 25th.  It was a great success and well attended.  Jeri Howard did a wonderful job with the activities and scenery that were used.
Several items were discussed and held for further discussion including: flags, Communion style, children's sermons, offering, worship style, new hymnals, and continuing First UPtown nights on Wednesday.

The Session voted not to hold a meeting in July.  The regular meeting will be held in August on the 13th.
The Personnel committee voted to hire Bryce Dellamano as the new Youth Nursery attendant to replace Anna Dellamano.  We thank Anna for all her help in the nursery.

After a conversation with the Webster School Principal, we will be collecting pants, jackets and shoes for their preschool and elementary students during September. In part, these are for those who have "accidents" as kids that age do.  Also, sometimes kids come inappropriately dressed for the weather or things don't fit and are worn out.  We do provide clothing for them from our Thrift Shop when we have the sizes.  They receive lots of school supplies but the clothing is a real need.

Finally, Kindercottage is improving their playgroud as required by the state.  If you want to help get a few friends together and call Brenda Crisp to set a day.  Also, they need a bobcat and operator on August 10 or 11.  If you want to know more, email Sarah Ross at and I will send you the entire message along with plans.
