Preparing for Lent

With Ash Wednesday less than a week away, it is suddenly coming home that we are about to embark on a great journey of our faith.  Again, we come to the time of second New Year’s resolution.  That special time of the year when we realize that pledge we made at 12:00:01 a.m. on January 1 has yet to take shape.  Thankfully, here is Lent and the opportunity to fast from that junk food, soda (pop, cola), chocolate, or whatever else we have decided we need to give up.

This year, as with last, I am encouraging you not to think of Lent as a time of giving up something that you eat or drink, but to fast from the things that have taken time away from being with God, and coming to more fully know Jesus Christ.  Use this time to further develop a spiritual practice, or perhaps start a new one.  Either way, do not just give up something, but also replace it with more devotional to your own discipleship and faith.

Consider that this is also a time to finally remove the things that have been weighing you down.  We all carry emotional and spiritual baggage.  This season is the perfect time to take those things and clear them from your life.  Upon freeing yourself from the shackles of anger, hate, envy, strife, and so much more, it is as if we ourselves are transfigured as Christ himself.  We become something different, and perhaps we better reflect the glory of God.

Please prayerfully consider the ways in which you have become weighed down in your faith and relationship with Jesus Christ.  Then, take time to consider the ways in which you may let that go.  Bring these with you on Wednesday night, and we will start our Lenten journey together, lifting one another from our burdens and starting with renewed energy as we head toward Jerusalem.

With the blessings of the Lord, Jesus Christ,

Pastor Jeff

Lenten Journey: Photo-A-Day

As we journey through this season of Lent, some will choose to give up something. Some will go about their lives as if it was ordinary time. Some will choose to be more reflective. Some will take something on. Whatever your practices this season, will you join this photo-a-day challenge and share with our church family and others how you perceive each word of the day? No explanation needed. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Tag us on your Instagram and Facebook photos and add the hashtag #fupclentphoto.

You don't have to be a great photographer. This project is more about the practice of paying attention and being intentional, than it is using the right filter or getting the perfect shot. If you don't have Instagram or Facebook, we'd still love for you to share your photos. Just e-mail them to the office and we will take it from there.  This is something where everyone can participate.  Young and young-at-heart; By yourself or as a family.

Need a daily reminder? We'll share the word of the day every morning on Facebook and remember to pick up your card with the daily words in the Narthex.

Let’s start this 40-day journey together, sharing glimpses of our lives with one another. Let this be an intentional time, even for a few minutes a day, to pause, remember and reflect.
