Cross Roads and Changes

As we enter into some of the hottest days of the year, I realize that everything seems to drag.  Just looking outside can make us sweat, let alone actually going out in this damp heat.  We slow down, we need to rest more, we become sticky and become glued to the furniture, and the thought of that one last errand to the store becomes daunting.  Time and again in the heat of summer it seems that clocks slow down, even the digital ones, and worse yet the ones on our mobile devices.  Life….just……drags…….on…………

Here is a greater cool down for us.  Starting July 10th, we will be experimenting with a new concept in worship.  We will have an Artist-in-Residence who will be painting during worship.  “What?” you may be asking.  Well, the deal is that we all have a variety of gifts.  These gifts all can lend themselves to worship.  In fact, I believe that all of our gifts and talents are useful for worship, and/or praise, and always glorifying God.  Sure, some may not be as suitable for Sunday worship, but that does not mean that they cannot be used in other places, in other ways, at other times.

So what is an Artist-In-Residence?  The idea of an Artist-In-Residence is to bring another form artistic expression to life in worship.  We enjoy readings and sermons, the written and spoken arts.  We enjoy music, the performed arts.  We enjoy seeing images in the sanctuary, the created arts.  Well, what we will be doing is sharing in the creation of new art with an artist.  We will be able to watch as new pieces are created within the space of worship.

Austin Dellamano and I have been working on a five week series focused on Cross Roads.  During our services, Austin will be bringing his visions to life on canvas.  We will participate with him as we watch the Spirit move through him as he shares his talents.  Eventually, the works that are created will be a central focus of our new chapel space.  I am very excited about this, and I hope that we can all enjoy this together.

I want to say a very big thank you to this congregation for your spirit of experimentation and adaptation.  I realize that a lot has been asked, and we have tried a variety of new things.  Some of worked well, some have worked okay, while others have fell flat, and some are still waiting to be analyzed for future consideration.  All of this is part of our working together to find the heart and soul of the church, and develop our discipleship, while we look to engage ourselves in deeper and broader study and understanding, and offering an opportunity for those who have yet to begin their journeys a place to start.  Thank you so much for trying new things, hearing new ways, and especially supporting the continuing as well as new ministries of this church.

Blessings to you all in our journey,

Pastor Jeff

This year, we removed the cost of Per Capita from the budget.  The intention is that each of us will pay our portion as part of our own spiritual disciplines and practices.  So far we have received nearly half of our assessment for the year.  Thank you to those who have paid, and a friendly reminder to those who have yet to do so.  Our assessment is $30.34 per active member.

Per Capita is assessed by the total number of active members of each church in the Presbyterian Church (USA).  The first part of the number is based on the budget of the General Assembly, our national body, and is divided by the total number of Presbyterians in the nation.  The second portion supports the budget of the Synod of Mid-America which represents Presbyterians in parts of Kansas, almost all of Missouri, and our part of Illinois.  The third portion is based upon the Presbyterians living in the greater Metro area of St. Louis known as the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy.  Just as our own congregation needs its budget supported by our members, so do these levels of our connected church.

Thank you for helping to support our ministries, and the ministries of the area, the region, the nation, and around the world.

We are having a Church Rummage Sale on Sat., July 23 from 8-12.  We need lots of volunteers for this and we also need your "stuff" as well.  If you would like to donate items, please put them by the stairs to the upstairs Sunday School rooms, so it does not get confused with Thrift Shop donations.  There will be a set-up on Friday, July 22 at 6 PM.  Plan to help us out!!!   Outreach Committee

Collinsville Faith in Action is hosting its Dinner Auction on Friday, July 22 at the Gateway Center.  This annual event, attended by 200+ people, is their largest community fundraiser.  Thjey need help to support FIA's mission of providing services without charge to seniors and adults with disabilities in Collinsville, Caseyville, Maryvill, State Park, and partys of Fairmont City.  See the church bulletin board for information of if you have items to donate, contact Bonnie Krupp.

Friday, July 15 is a Trivia Night in the hall in support of  the redecorating of our Nursery by Lauren Carter for her Girl Scout Gold Award.  She is asking for baked goods and you presence at this event!

Session Minutes - June, 2016

The meeting was held on June 13th.  A discussion was held to replace the pew Bibles with the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version).  These would be a soft cover Bible with an initial cost of $8 to $10 each, or an initial investment of approximately $2,000. It was voted to purchase these Bibles from the Rummage Sale profits.

Lauren Carter will be hosting a Trivia night on July 15.  This is to enable her to complete her Girl Scout Gold Award project of remodeling the nursery and writing a manual for nursery workers.  Please bring items for the Silent Auction and bring a team to participate.

The Session voted to remove all items from the Pre-K room and start remodeling (to include a new paint job and blinds) so that this room may be used as a Chapel.  A donor has come forward and donated the cost of the blinds and valances for the remainder of the first floor.  Many, many thanks to the donor.  It was M/S/A to finish the blind project.

Karen Kneedler will chair the nominating committee for the year 2016.  Please consider helping your church by volunteering additional time and talent to continue Pastor Jeff’s vision of our ministry.

The cost of continuing the maintenance of the lower part of Glenwood Cemetery would be an additional $50 per month, making the total paid each month $875.  It was M/S/A to approve this expenditure.

Dear Church Family:  Thank you so much for the amazing Bible that you gave me for graduation.  It means a lot to know that the church as a whole is looking out for me and wishing me success in all I do.  Sincerely, Bryce Dellamano

To my Church Family:  Thank you for your prayers and phone calls and cards.  It's been a wonderful feeling to know people were praying for me to get well.  It worked.  Pastor Jeff wanted to come to visit and I had to say "No" until I felt it was safe.  Thanks again to my church family.  Valeda Close

On behalf of the Collinsville Woman's Club and The Empty Bowl Committee, we would like to thank you, the members of First United Presbyterian Church, for the use of your shuttle bus for the Empty Bowl on Feb. 10, 2016.  It was a great help in transporting our guests from the parking lots to the building at Gateway Center.
With your help and support, the 4th Annual Empty Bowl raised $12,565.55 for the Collinsville Food Pantry.  The funds raised through this community-wide event will enable the food pantry to help more people in our community who face empty bowls every day.
Thank you again!  We are so grateful for your support.  Working together, we can make a big difference!  Barbara Smock, President, Woman's Club & Chair of The Empty Bowl
